Frequently Asked Questions: Troubleshooting Stop messages

Q-2. Can you generate a crash dump when a system hangs?

A-2. Yes, but you must first configure the keyboard driver to be able to force a dump. For info on how to do this, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;244139.

Q-1. Because my system is configured to create a small memory dump and immediately  reboot when a stop error occurs, I didn't see the stop message. How can I read the dump file that was created?

A-1. See the posting titled Working with Crashdumps - Debugger 101 on The Deployment Guys Blog for a quick walkthrough of how to do this.
