Questions:
Managing devices
Q-2. How can I install out-of-box
printer drivers from the command line when Windows is running?
A-2. If you need to install
out-of-box drivers when Windows is running, you can use the pnputil
/a command-line utility to do this. This works with most types of
drivers but unfortunately not with printer drivers. If you need to
install printer drivers from the command line when Windows is
running, you have two options:
Q-1. Can I enable or disable devices
from the command-line?
A-1. Yes, by using the DevCon.exe command-line
tool, see
here for where to find it and how to use it.
Frequently Asked
Questions: Power Management
Q-2. I just installed Windows 7 and my
system isn't able to enter sleep mode. What might be wrong?
A-2. If you install Windows 7 on a
system and then discover that there's no option for entering sleep
mode, check to see if Aero is enabled. If you can't enable Aero on
the system, then you probably have the default SVGA video driver
installed instead of the vendor-specific driver for your graphics
processor. The inbox SVGA does not support sleep mode.
To resolve the issue, go to Windows
Update and check to see if a vendor-specific driver can be
downloaded for your graphics processor. If not, check your system
vendor's website.
Q-1. How can I identify a laptop
battery that might be failing?
A-1. Run the following command in a command
prompt window: powercfg –energy
Doing this will generate a report that can
help you identify any issues with regard to your computer's power
management settings. Typical output will include a Battery section that
might look something like this: Battery:Battery Information Battery ID 00860 2009/02/13Hewlett-PackardPrimary
Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Serial Number 00860 2009/02/13 Chemistry LIon
Long Term 1 Design Capacity 73440 Last Full Charge 53480
Look at the last two lines of this section
of the command output. If the Last Full Charge value is significantly
less than the Design Capacity value then your battery isn't holding
enough of a charge anymore and may be starting to fail.
